United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County held another successful Write Start Project this summer, gifting local teachers with free school supplies. Educators in Harlandale and East Central ISDs received over $40,000 in school supplies, including essential items like composition notebooks, crayons, pencils, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer, highlighters, storage bags and much more.

These supplies give educators some peace of mind and a little bit of financial relief, as the average U.S. school teacher spends more than $800 each year on classroom supplies. Texas school teachers spend an estimated $298 million out of their own pockets, more than any other state.

The Write Start Project is just one example of how United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County helps educators and students succeed.

United Way’s Successful Students Impact Area also invests in programs that increase reading proficiency, math proficiency and support opportunity youth.
