FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County encourages residents to take advantage of Project Cool, an initiative that provides free boxed fans to seniors over the age of 55 and people with disabilities, as the recent heatwave continues.

Today, August 21, will be the hottest day of the year in San Antonio at an expected high temperature of 106 degrees, with a heat index going as high as 111 degrees.

Seniors over the age of 55 or people with a disability can call United Way’s 2-1-1 Helpline to request a free boxed fan. Project Cool is a partnership between United Way, the City of San Antonio, Catholic Charities and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul that delivers box fans which can provide relief from utility bills and from the heat.

Residents who are not senior citizens can still discover critical relief from the weather with 2-1-1. Call United Way’s 2-1-1 Helpline, select option 1 and you can:

  • Get a free box fan if you are a senior over the age of 55 or disabled
  • Find free home weatherization services/assistance in your area to prepare for the winter or next summer
  • Locate the nearest cooling centers to receive more immediate relief
  • Find information on food pantries, utility bill assistance or other services that can help provide financial relief as your monthly utility bill soars in cost due to the heat.

We encourage the people of San Antonio to call United Way’s 2-1-1 Helpline to find assistance with the summer heat. 2-1-1 is open 24/7/365, anonymous and always free. Spanish language and line language translation options are available.
