To support this important building block, we offer thanks and congratulations to the San Antonio volunteers who participated in 2021’s Read Across America Day and National Reading Month to promote and celebrate reading in Bexar County.

Ten Mystery Readers connected with school children and the community by reading their favorite stories aloud. Take a minute to hear them on our YouTube playlist. Special thanks to:

Laura Vaccaro, Valero Energy
Glenn Lucadou, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County
Jasmine Paul, Author
Dr. Edwin Blanton, Author and Texas A&M University, San Antonio
Brandon Logan, Urban Capital Partners
Marcus Peoples, Author
Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, Texas A&M University, San Antonio
Robert Melvin, Limitless Creations, Inc.
Matthew Melton, Encap Flatrock Midstream
Javier Salazar, Bexar County Sheriff

Nine schools and programs benefitted from 100 Virtual Readers who shared their storytelling with children who were excited, engaged and were learning as they listened. We shared 50 additional videos with our Successful Students Impact Partners, supporting grade-level reading by the end of 3rd grade.

We send our appreciation to UPS, our National Reading Month sponsor, who also helped build 800 Literacy Kits for local students.

United Way also supports literacy for our community through various reading programs, after- and out-of-school time curriculums, and individual academic plans to ensure academic success.

Literacy has the power to change lives, and reading is the superpower that builds the foundation for a hopeful future.
