United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County’s Emerging Leaders helped vulnerable military families in San Antonio fight food insecurity at the 10th annual Hunger Action Pop-up Pantry at JBSA-Lackland on Saturday, September 28.
Volunteers organized, assembled and distributed kits filled with healthy food items to hundreds of military families, with food provided by the San Antonio Food Bank. More than 1,200 pounds of food was given out to active-duty and retired service members. 700+ individuals were supported with food and essential community services.
Research by RAND shows that there are an estimated 325,000 military families experiencing food insecurity in the United States. 26% of active-duty service members are considered food insecure and approximately 15% of active-duty service members rely on food pantries like this one to support their families.

2-1-1 also features trained Military Navigators who can assist active-duty, Veteran and military families in finding health and human service programs available in the San Antonio area.
